Smog tests can be conducted at a wide variety of smog check stations. Certain smog check stations, however, have chosen to participate in the BAR's STAR program. A STAR smog station is subject to additional oversight and review by the BAR, and they conduct more strenuous smog testing.

Star stations are authorized testing centers that can perform all the tests required to certify your vehicle. There are two types of star smog stations: Test and Repair: these stations can test and repair your vehicle if it doesn't pass the smog test. Test Only: these stations can only test your vehicle.

A smog check and a smog test are the same. The difference is whether you get the smog check at a test only station, which is not what Dhillon Motorsports, formerly known as Smog Man San Jose, CA, is. We will not only give your vehicle a certified smog check, but we will also repair it if it fails.

STAR stations must meet specified performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Some STAR stations are licensed to perform only tests, while others are licensed to perform both tests and repairs. The station is required to post a sign on the services it performs.
